Report: Newcastle sources react to Marcus Rashford rumours

Marcus Rashford is the latest surprise name to be linked with a move to Newcastle United during this summer’s transfer window.

Rashford does not appear to have much of a future at Manchester United after spending the last half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, and Newcastle United have been tipped to make a move.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are interested in a move for the England international.

That would seem strange. Eddie Howe already boasts the likes of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak and Will Osula in the Newcastle United squad, all of whom play in the positions in which Rashford would generally operate.

Now, some insight from The Chronicle has emerged.

Newcastle United not interested in signing Marcus Rashford

They claim that sources at St James’ Park have quickly distanced themselves from suggestions that Newcastle want to sign Rashford this summer.

While Newcastle do want to sign a new forward, the 27-year-old does not appear to be one of their targets.

Indeed, Geordie Boot Boys understands Rashford’s former teammate Anthony Elanga is a Newcastle transfer target this summer.

Why Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Marcus Rashford

Following the end of the Premier League season, Howe revealed exactly why signing players like Rashford just isn’t something Newcastle can do right now.

Newcastle’s wage structure, as well as the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), mean that established elite players are beyond their reach.

In May, the Newcastle United manager said: “If you’re talking about someone at the very top, who is already established, then I think the wages and the financial package becomes difficult for us.”

That doesn’t mean Newcastle cannot go out and sign some brilliant players this summer, just that they need to be careful on exactly who they spend their money on.

Rashford, at 27 and on a huge salary at Old Trafford, does not feel in keeping with the work the club have done in the transfer market during the PIF era.
