Manchester City officially fined by Premier League over Manchester United game

The Premier League’s clampdown on breaches of matchday discipline continued this week as Manchester City became the latest club to be fined over improper conduct during a fixture involving Manchester United.

The league confirmed on Thursday that City have been fined £1.08m after multiple delays to kick-offs and restarts during the 2024/25 season.

Including during the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, which saw the longest single delay of 2 minutes and 24 seconds before the second half.

City are not the first club this season to be sanctioned following a United fixture.

Tottenham Hotspur were fined £75,000 by the FA earlier in the campaign for two breaches of crowd control regulations in their September clash with Manchester United, following homophobic chanting allegations.

The Premier League published the full findings on their official website.

They also outlined the reasoning behind the disciplinary action taken against City.

Premier League also confirmed that the club accepted the breaches and apologised.

Premier League official statement:

“The Premier League and Manchester City FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 in relation to kick-off and re-start obligations.

“The breaches occurred in nine Premier League matches during the 2024/25 season.

“Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard.

“It also provides certainty to fans and participating clubs.

“It ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.

“As required by the Premier League Rules, the sanction agreement has been ratified by three members of the Independent Judicial Panel.”

As per Sky Sports’ report, the delays took place between October and February, with the Premier League noting City’s delayed compliance with Rule L.33.

A rule which mandates strict punctuality for kick-offs and second-half restarts.

The fine must be paid within 14 days of the sanction agreement’s execution.

It is separate from the 115 charges Manchester City are still facing for alleged financial breaches, which the club continues to deny unequivocally.

As per Sky Sports’ report, City were also previously fined over £2m last summer for similar violations across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.

This latest fine further shows the league’s focus on upholding professionalism and broadcast consistency across all matches.

Especially in high-profile fixtures like the Manchester derby.
