Arsenal Zubimendi deal: The€60m maestro Arteta couldn’t ignore

‘One of the World’s Best’ – Why Arsenal Are Signing Zubimendi

Arsenal interest in the Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi has reached a critical glaze, with Mikel Arteta fighting hard to sign a player many regard as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. The Spaniard has been a long-term target for the Gunners and it seems Arsenal’s interest in him this summer is now concrete.

Arsenal Zubimendi rumours have heated up in the last few weeks – with there being reports from Spain that the North London club are willing to pay his €60m release clause. Mikel Arteta is said to have identified the 25-year-old as his preferred midfield acquisition, being well acquainted with Zubimendi from his La Liga days. He is seen at the club as a transformative signing, one who can help anchor the midfield for years to come.

Zubimendi had shown loyalty to Real Sociedad in the past, rejecting several offers including one from Barcelona, however the timing now seems right. Sociedad will compete in the Europa League instead of the Champions League, and Zubimendi has shown interest in taking on a new challenge. His entourage indicated they feel drawn to Arsenal’s project and the tactical identity Arteta has built.

The Spanish international is under contract until 2027 so Arsenal will have to pay his full clause. But they feel that’s a worthwhile investment, considering the dearth of midfielders who possess both positional discipline and high-end ball progression. Though Bayern Munich and Manchester United are also monitoring the situation but Arsenal appear to be leading the race as things stand.

Zubimendi’s Fit: Why Arsenal Are Moving Now

Zubimendi is also a good fit for Arteta’s system with his playing style. At the base of midfield he is excellent in possession under pressure, controlling the tempo and finding passes through the lines with his intelligence and craft. Not so much of the heavy-duty defensive midfielder, Zubimendi is all about timing, positioning and technical accuracy.

The current blend is Declan Rice, Jorginho and Thomas Partey of Arsenal. But Partey’s injury history and Jorginho’s age has meant the club are looking at more long-term options. Arsenal Zubimendi rumours aren’t just about squad depth – they’re about creating something lasting within a side that’s designed to compete at the top.

Zubimendi, who averaged upwards of 90% pass-accuracy in La Liga last season, also maintained one of the top ball-recovery rates in Spain’s top flight. He’s smart enough that he allows guys around him — Ødegaard, or Rice, who you can slot in there — to play with more freedom. For a club that would like to dominate games in both Europe and the Premier League, a player of Zubimendi’s profile becomes essential.

And yet Arteta has constructed a team whose defining feature is clarity of roles. So with Zubimendi’s discipline and understanding of the game, Arsenal would finally get a midfielder that can sit, protect the defense and distribute — while not sacrificing the touch-and-feel side of the game nor the pace of the game.

Author’s Opinion

Zubimendi is not just another midfield option; he is an indication of where Arsenal are going. Top teams covet this player, and he, in turn, finds himself drawn to the precision of Arteta’s vision. If the Gunners complete the deal, it won’t be a surprise—it will be a statement.

There are risks, of course. Adjusting to the physicality of the Premier League, adjusting to life away from his comfort zone in San Sebastián, living up to a hefty price are genuine challenges though. But football I.Q., system fit and mental maturity, Zubimendi ticks every box.

If you want to transform from being an inch-there-or-thereabouts team to a team that regularly competes for trophies, then you need more than flair in midfield, you need guile, control and a touch of belief. Zubimendi provides all three.
