Dan Burn shares the one moment that made him 'panic' during his Newcastle United career

Dan Burn was a picture of consistency for Newcastle United during the 2024/25 season.

The 33-year-old was outstanding throughout the campaign, playing the best football of his career in the black and white of Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe called Burn one of his best signings ever, and that is undeniable. A £13million arrival from Brighton, Burn has proven to be money well spent – even if it was just for his Carabao Cup final goal!

The giant defender created a moment that will last a lifetime at Wembley, scoring Newcastle’s opener as they beat Liverpool to end their trophy drought.

Dan Burn admits Newcastle United ‘panic’ during the Carabao Cup final

Burn played brilliantly that day, but there was a brief moment of extreme fear when Federico Chiesa threatened to spoil the Geordies’ party.

During an appearance on the High Performance podcast, Burn was asked how he felt the moment after Chiesa scored in stoppage time for Liverpool to halve the deficit.

“Panic, absolute panic,” he said.

“I thought we sorted it out well. I think that showed how far we have come as a team. It wasn’t like where it was pure panic, balls getting booted away and stuff like that.

“We managed to control the game. We kept the ball in the corner well. At that point you’ve just got to see the game out.”

Before the 2-1 victory at Wembley, Newcastle had not beaten the Reds since December 2015. That was when Steve McClaren was manager.

For all his incredible work on Tyneside, Howe had been unable to conquer Liverpool. That changed at the best moment possible.
