'Direct contact': Fabrizio Romano now says Newcastle United target is open to moving abroad

Newcastle United have been informed of an update regarding Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, who is believed to be on Eddie Howe’s list of transfer targets.

With a big summer on the horizon, the Magpies are looking to spend well in the transfer window after failing to sign a single player for the starting XI since the 2023 summer window.

Newcastle United have over £150m to spend, and are keen on signing a right-sided centre-back to eventually replace Fabian Schar, whose contract is up at the end of next season.

After missing out on him in 2024, Newcastle are reportedly interested in Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah. The 22-year-old was in discussions with a move to Tyneside while Newcastle were continuing to struggle with PSR. In the end, Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to get themselves out of a points deduction.

Newcastle value Quansah at around £30m after his disappointing Premier League season, which saw him make just 13 appearances. However, Liverpool are looking to get as much as £40m for the youngster.

While Quansah remains on Newcastle’s radar, football transfer correspondent Fabrizio Romano has shared a new update which could make Eddie Howe and his recruitment team spring into action.

Jarell Quansah set to join Bayer Leverkusen despite Newcastle United interest

Unfortunately, it is not the news Howe would want to hear, as it currently looks like Quansah will move abroad this summer.

On social media platform X, Romano had shared that Quansah and Sevilla defender Loic Bade are on Bayer’s list of transfer targets. Since then Romano has said that Quansah is open to joining the Bundesliga side, and that the two clubs are in direct contact over a move.

Now, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has shared that terms between the two clubs have been agreed. Therefore, Quansah is likely to reject an approach from Newcastle in favour of a move to Germany.

The Englishman leaves Liverpool as a title-winner and will have a huge chance to make a name for himself away from the Premier League.

Despite the bad news, Newcastle still have other defenders in their sights this summer. Marc Guehi is still high on Newcastle’s list of targets. He could be available for around £40m.

Newcastle United could have signed Jarell Quansah in exchange for Alexander Isak

On Wednesday, it was reported that Liverpool are tabling a bid for Alexander Isak after his sensational season with the Magpies. However, Newcastle are not interested in selling him by any means.

Should a deal be struck, it is believed that Liverpool would have to pay over £150m for Isak, which would break the British record transfer fee.

While Newcastle are not keen on selling, Quansah could have been used to try and broker a deal between the two clubs for Isak. It was recently reported that Liverpool could offer four players to Newcastle in an effort to get them to accept a deal for Isak, and Quansah was believed to be one of those players.

The three other players mentioned were Harvey Elliot, Joe Gomez and young winger Ben Doak, who spent the 2024/25 campaign at Championship side Middlesbrough.

Newcastle will now have to move away from a deal for Quansah, with Leverkusen appearing to beat them to their man.
