Desmond Watson Talks Weight Loss, Smoother Road Than Gators Teammates

June 19th, 2025

Can 400-plus pound rookie defensive tackle Desmond Watson make the Tampa Bay roster?

The undrafted rookie out of the University of Florida is a long shot but he will get his chance.

Watson was very positive about his Bucs experience last week when talking to Rock Riley on The Rock Stops Here podcast at mandatory minicamp. The Plant City native raved about the support he’s gotten from veteran teammates.

“I’ve been talking to my other college teammates; some of them haven’t had the same experience,” Watson said. “I feel like everybody here is helpful. … Literally everybody is trying to drag everybody along, you know, get’em to where they can perform their best even if it may be their competition.”

When it came to Watson’s well publicized weight challenges, Watson went there first in the interview. Asked to state the No. 1 thing he must do to make the Bucs roster, Watson focused on his body.

“I feel like it’s pretty evident, losing the weight, of course,” Watson replied. “Still, even though I’ve been doing good on the journey, I think it’s still a thing for me. Other than that, just getting better. I feel like this league is about what you can do for them, and I want to be as useful as possible.”

Watson added that he does not have a specific weight goal from the Buccaneers. He and the Bucs “have a great understanding that it’s a journey” Watson said, “and they just want me to keep going, as do I.”
