Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Target Crystal Palace Captain Marc Guéhi

Liverpool are in the midst of what is turning into one of the biggest summer transfer windows in the club’s history. With right back Jeremie Frimpong arriving to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and deals nearing completion for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, there’s already been plenty of excitement.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has already moved to Brentford and Darwin Nuñez and Federico Chiesa are attracting attention from Napoli in particular. And most recently, it appears 22-year-old centre half Jarell Quansah is going to be joining Leverkusen in a €40M+ (£34M) deal that’s expected to close shortly.

An awful lot has happened and more is about to—and probably soon. On that front, the case of Quansah departing means a new centre half will be needed, and it appears there is a decent chance at least that that centre half will be Crystal Palace’s 24-year-old captain and England international Marc Guéhi.

Liverpool have been linked to Guéhi in the past, including last summer, but previously Palace’s transfer fee demands prevented any deal going ahead. The player, though, is heading into the final year of his contract and according to The Telegraph that means there might just be an opening for the Reds.

Palace rejected a bid totalling £70M with add-ons from Tottenham in January, and the fees talked about last summer when Liverpool were last linked with him were getting into similar territory. January, though, was mid-season. And last summer Guéhi had two seasons still to run on his Palace contract.

There have been questions about Guéhi’s suitability for the Reds when he’s been linked before given that at 6’ (1.82M) he would be Liverpool’s shortest centre half in a while—and underwhelming aerial numbers further paint a picture of a player who simply isn’t very good in the air compared to the world’s top centre halves.

If he is the target for the Reds and a transfer goes through, that side of his game will raise eyebrows—and probably earn a few unkind comparisons to the likes of Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez—even if his positioning, defensive work on the ground, and technical ability with the ball are all stellar.
