Shedeur Sanders has been the most talked-about rookie in the NFL since he was drafted back in late April.
The former Colorado quarterback and son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders was drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns, following a precipitous slide down the board that lasted days.
Sanders took things in stride at and around the draft, but a repeated offense off the field after the draft has some examining his maturity and commitment level.
According to a Medina Ohio Municipal Court record, Sanders has been stopped twice for speeding. The first incident allegedly happened on June 5, and the Ohio State Patrol says the quarterback was stopped after driving 91 miles per hour in a 65-MPH zone.
The Browns are aware of Sanders' off-field incidents, and they addressed them formally on Thursday.
"He is taking care of the tickets," team spokesperson Peter John-Baptiste said to Cleveland.com.
The Browns ended mandatory minicamp last week, but Sanders stayed in town for rookie orientation with the team. He was fined a total of $249 for the first speeding incident, but failed to appear in court for the arraignment following that incident.
The second speeding violation occurred on June 17, as Strongsville police say he was going 101 MPH in a 60 mile zone. The quarterback can either pay a $250 fine or fight the charges in court in early July.
Sanders, initially believed to be a first-round pick before dropping all the way to round four and day three of the draft, signed a four-year, $4.6 million contract with Cleveland after he was drafted.
The Browns have adopted an unconventional approach to their quarterback room this season, and could take four quarterbacks into the regular season as part of the active roster. Sanders is joined by a fellow rookie in Dillon Gabriel, as well as seasoned veterans Joe Flacco and the injured Deshaun Watson.
Sanders is already facing an uphill battle in the NFL as a late-round pick looking to prove himself against more established competition. We'll see if these offseason infractions are a blip on the radar or a sign of more to come.
