Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on a £64 million target who admires the club to help fill one of Rúben Amorim’s key problem positions.
After a dismal 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, whilst also missing out on European silverware, this summer has been etched to be a busy one for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United.
Amorim’s first summer got off to a flying start, securing Matheus Cunha in only a matter of weeks, but the transfers have since dried up.
United’s clear priority is their forward line, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo seemingly next on the list of targets, but there will definitely still be problem areas to attack once their forward-line conundrum is answered.
This being said, the Red Devils are reportedly eyeing up a move for a £64 million-rated goalkeeper, who would be set to replace Andre Onana if the Cameroonian departs Old Trafford.
Amorim is a fan of Costa
According to a report on X from journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto, United are keen on FC Porto’s Diogo Costa as a replacement for Onana off the back of consecutive poor campaigns.
A translation of the post reads, “As I have been reporting in recent weeks, Diogo Costa remains on Man United’s list to take over the goal. Valor could be a stumbling block for the Red Devils.
It continues by saying, “he has been Ruben Amorim’s favourite since January, but there are more options on the table if Onana leaves.”

CaughtOffside state that both United and Manchester City are looking at Costa, who has a release clause of around £64 million.
Costa says he ‘admires’ United
As also reported by transfer insider Ben Jacobs, United have discussed the signing of Costa internally, as they are fans of the shot stopper. Despite this, no approach has been made as of yet.
Costa was recently the hero for his national side, as his penalty save in the penalty shootout helped to edge Portugal past Spain in the Nations League final.

This isn’t the first time that the impressive shot-stopper has made the headlines from the spot, as last summer he saved all three of Slovenia’s penalties to send Portugal to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.
When Porto played United back in October 2024, Costa said, via BBC Sport, that United “are the biggest team in England, a special club and one I have admired since I was a kid.”
With the admiration between Costa and United clearly going both ways, this transfer saga could be one to keep an eye on in the coming months.
