Manchester United could solve their goalkeeping issue by snapping up Yahia Fofana. The highly-rated Ivorian shot-stopper has been recommended by Didier Drogba.
Fofana Ticks All the Right Boxes for United
Manchester United are on the hunt for smart, low-cost transfers this summer. Now, Yahia Fofana fits the bill perfectly. Andre Onana has found it hard to get confidence during his first two seasons. Meanwhile, backup keeper Altay Bayindir has looked unconvincing in his few appearances.
Genuine competition is needed amongst the sticks for the Red Devils. Fofana is currently at Angers in France. He is making a name for himself as one of the best young keepers in Ligue 1. His form has been noticed all over Europe. Reportedly Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has personally recommended the Ivorian player to top clubs.
At 24, Fofana has exceeded expectations at a young age. He has the best stats out of all under-25 goalkeepers in Europe. That is in terms of goals conceded compared to expected goals. With Bayindir losing his national team spot and Utd lacking depth, signing Fofana would be a great call.
Smart Price, Big Potential
What makes the move even more appealing is the price. Fofana’s contract with Angers runs out next year. He’s available for just £8.4m. That is a bargain in today’s transfer market. Utd are already spending big elsewhere, eyeing moves for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. So, a cut-price deal for a top young keeper makes perfect sense.
Fofana offers more than just depth. He could seriously challenge Onana for the No.1 shirt. Meanwhile, Tom Heaton will be staying on as third choice. So, the timing to sign Fofana couldn’t be better.
While names like Vanja Milinkovic-Savic have been floated, Fofana brings both promise and performance. That is something Man Utd desperately need. If the club wants to fix their keeper crisis, this is the move to make.
