Pundits have been discussing Jadon Sancho’s efforts during his loan spell at Chelsea.
Chelsea decided not to sign Jadon Sancho at the end of his loan spell, leaving the winger at a crossroads in his career. The England winger’s stock was once as high as it could be after his initial Borussia Dortmund loan spell, but his big-money move to Manchester United led to a spell of poor form and a falling out with his former boss, Erik ten Hag.
A loan return to Dortmund followed, and Sancho performed decently during his loan spell with Chelsea, but the Blues ultimately decided not to pull the trigger on their £25million option to buy after failing to reach an agreement with the player.
United are certain to sell him this summer, but Sancho must choose his next move carefully as he looks to rebuild his reputation. Speaking about the situation, former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips told Prime Casino: “I actually think Jadon Sancho is a really good player. I’m not sure what position he excels in exactly these days. I don't think he's a winger anymore. I think he's better suited to playing inside, like one of the more advanced No. 10s that teams often have two of now. He’s not the player to dribble past others, but he can create opportunities, and he has talent to make the difference in the final third.
“I’m surprised Chelsea didn’t want to take him on, but it’s harder at Stamford Bridge because they just have so many players who can play that role. I suppose you can’t keep taking on players in that position without sending some out of the door, and that’s cost Jadon. I’m not convinced he’ll suit Thomas Frank at Tottenham. I think he’ll focus on Bryan Mbeumo, he plays the way he wants. I’m not sure Jadon can do that, because Frank wants players to take on a heavy workload, and that might not be ideal.
“Aston Villa’s a bit different, though, especially if they don’t take on Marco Asensio. He can work hard and create chances there, but the problem he has is that his reputation is that of a bad egg. I don’t think it’s justified, but there are so many options for clubs these days, he might now be overlooked, and he’ll be seen as a gamble. Jadon might need to go somewhere where he can prove himself all over again like he did in his first spell with Borussia Dortmund. I really hope he does.”
Murphy agrees
Speaking on TalkSPORT recently, Danny Murphy also defended Sancho’s efforts, saying: “I'd like to think people evolve, young players especially, you have to give them time to make mistakes," Murphy said in response to Jordan's criticism. "But I actually think he's done alright for Chelsea this season when I've seen him.
"His technical ability is brilliant. [He] very rarely gives the ball away, now end product is a question mark. He's played in a lot of big games, and that's because he's reliable with the ball and he knows his job."
Murphy added: “He's a bright footballer. He turned up at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, when he was 20 and because they paid a huge amount for him which was inflated, he was expected to hit [the ground running]. I think Jadon Sancho for £25million is really good value."
