Joe Gomez’s Liverpool future has had question marks hanging over it for the past couple of years now.
The centre-back has always been reliable when called upon, but injuries have often hindered his progression.
However, the fact that Gomez can play across the back four is likely one of the main reasons he’s been kept around for as long as he has.
Versatility is key in this day and age, and to be honest, Gomez has that in abundance.

Liverpool have been one of the busiest teams in the Premier League regarding transfers this summer, and their latest links with Marc Guehi have once again brought up the future of Gomez.
However, since 20 June marks 10 years since the defender made the move to Anfield, the defender has put out a heartfelt message to fans while also making a subtle hint about where his future may lie.
Joe Gomez is ‘hungry for more’ at Liverpool ahead of the 2025-26 season
Taking to his personal Instagram account, Gomez shared his gratitude for the Liverpool fans making him feel welcome for the decade that he’s been at the club.
“10 years ago, as a kid moving from south east London to Liverpool, I couldn’t even imagine looking this far into the future,” he wrote.

“Looking back now I’m full of gratitude & take so much pride in being a part of this club and city.
“No denying the challenges along the way, but embracing them to grow as both a player and a person is something I’ve always tried to do & I’m grateful for all the support in trying to do that.
“It’s been a blessing to be a part of the different dressing rooms and getting to create such special memories over the years with so many great players & staff.
“I felt it was important to share my thanks to you all for the support throughout the years, it’s always meant the world and I will never take it for granted.
“A decade in red… and still hungry to keep going.”
Joe Gomez still has an important part to play for Arne Slot and Liverpool
One of the main things that Gomez brings to Liverpool is the fact that even if he’s not been in the team for a few weeks, he takes to it like a duck to water and gets stuck in straight away.
Of course, the amount of injuries he’s suffered has hindered his chances of becoming a regular starter for the Anfield outfit, but with the way that things have gone over the last couple of seasons, he’s more than done his part.
Jarell Quansah has recently been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee worth around £35million, with Gomez also rumoured to be on his way out as Leeds are among those interested.
In the grand scheme of things, however, it feels like Gomez would be far more useful to Liverpool by staying at the club rather than the £30 or £40million Slot would receive for selling him.

There are already a lot of changes occurring at Anfield regarding their back four, and, to be honest, it’ll be hard for them to find another homegrown player who’s as versatile as the Englishman.
Of course, nothing is yet set in stone, but with the way things seem to be headed at Liverpool this season, the Reds should try and keep hold of Gomez for as long as possible, even if his injuries are a bit of a worry.
