Newcastle United and Liverpool are very closely intertwined in the transfer window right now.
Liverpool want to sign Alexander Isak, despite Newcastle United insisting that he is not for sale. Arne Slot is also eyeing another major deal, with Liverpool intending to bid for Marc Guehi.
That would be a blow for Eddie Howe, as Guehi has been a major Newcastle target for almost 12 months.
The Premier League champions look set to swoop in and steal the player Newcastle have been chasing, but that is not the only Liverpool decision that should infuriate those on Tyneside.

How much Newcastle United wanted to pay Liverpool for Jarell Quansah
Guehi has not been Howe’s only centre-back target. Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah too, with Toon officials believing they could buy him for £30million plus add-ons.
That prediction has proven to be correct, but a transfer to St James’ Park is not on the cards.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Quansah is going to join Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £30million plus £5million in add-ons.

Given the 22-year-old’s potential, the overall figure of £35million represents serious value for money. It was only last year that Newcastle valued Quansah at £50million, as they tried to include him in a deal for Anthony Gordon to move to Anfield.
Why Liverpool will be happier not selling to Newcastle United
While it remains to be seen how high Quansah was on Newcastle’s list, there will surely be some internal disappointment that another transfer target is moving elsewhere – for a fee that the Magpies were willing to pay.
However, selling to Newcastle and selling to Bayer Leverkusen is very different for Liverpool.
Letting Quansah head to Tyneside would strengthen one of their Premier League rivals. That is something that Liverpool will not want to do. And if they did, they would likely inflate the fee.
It leaves Newcastle looking elsewhere for a new centre-back. Quansah is moving elsewhere, while Guehi could soon become unavailable as well. Fortunately, Newcastle have other targets that are not currently in the public domain.
