Manchester City are reportedly set to sign an exciting young talent from the Aston Villa academy.

Midfielder Freddie Lawrie is expected to join City once his scholarship deal at Villa expires, according to The Athletic.

The 16-year-old, who joined Villa from Port Vale in September 2023, is considered one of the brightest prospects in his age group.

Lawrie is a versatile player, capable of operating in defence as well as midfield, though he has primarily featured in the latter role for Villa.

He made his debut for the England Under-16s in August and has since earned seven more caps at that level.

Villa are said to have made a strong offer to convince Lawrie to stay, but City now appear poised to complete the deal.

Once terms are agreed, City will be required to pay Villa compensation.

It has been a strong year for Villa’s academy. The club’s Under-18s secured a domestic treble, winning the Under-18 Premier League South, the Under-18 Premier League National Final, and the FA Youth Cup Final at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Villa’s Under-19s reached the UEFA Youth League Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Barcelona following a 3-1 defeat at Villa Park.
