Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi wants to join Liverpool ahead of Newcastle, Tottenham and other interested clubs, sources have told Football Insider.
The centre-back, 24, believes he can do better than Newcastle, who pursued him throughout the last summer window but failed to agree a deal after four rejected bids.
It is believed he could have pushed hard and persuaded Palace to accept Newcastle’s offer had he really wanted to join the Magpies.
The north-east club still have the defender “on their radar” but Liverpool have now emerged in pole position to agree a deal.
Sources say Guehi is holding out for a move to a Premier League and Champions League challenger – and he has let it be known to friends that Liverpool is of particular interest to him.
It comes as the Reds will pave the way for a new centre-back signing by selling Jarell Quansah to Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen.

Football Insider revealed on 20 June that Quansah has agreed terms with the Leverkusen and is set to undergo a medical ahead of joining for a club-record £35million fee.
Liverpool will plough the proceeds into a deal for Guehi, with a bid in excess of £50million being submitted imminently.

Liverpool close in on Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace decision
Liverpool have been long-term admirers of the England star, as Football Insider exclusively revealed last September that Arne Slot has been “won over” by Guehi.
The FA Cup-winning captain has also attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea alongside Newcastle and Tottenham, but has now made his intentions clear.
Palace, meanwhile, have been unsuccessful in attempts to tie their star man down to a new contract and instead are prepared to sell him for a significant profit.
Liverpool’s imminent £50million bid would represent more than double what the Eagles paid for the former Chelsea defender and allow them to reinvest in their squad.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 11 June that Crystal Palace are planning to sign Ousmane Diomande, who has been linked with PSG, Chelsea and Man United.

Ibrahima Konate update emerges after Real Madrid latest
Liverpool’s interest in Guehi has come as Slot plans to strengthen at the heart of his defence with Quansah set to head out of the exit door.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 18 June that Liverpool are “concerned” about Ibrahima Konate’s future amid growing interest from Real Madrid.
With just 12 months remaining on his contract at Anfield, Los Blancos are prepared to lure him away in a similar deal to their signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
This comes after Football Insider revealed Konate could leave Liverpool within weeks as they aim to make money from his sale amid frustrating contract talks.
