Expert gives Leeds United Premier League verdict – transfer spend will be key

Leeds United know the huge task ahead of them next season. The Premier League has become more difficult to survive every season.

The last few years have seen all newly promoted clubs sent straight back down to the Championship. Some clubs who beat the odds like Fulham and Brentford, leaned on smart recruitment.

Leeds need to follow this same route during the transfer window. And the club have been off to a great start so far with the signing of Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer. Possible deals for Habib Diarra and Jaka Bijol look like solid additions; these players rank high in statistics in their respective leagues.

The Whites survived their first season when they returned to the Premier League back in 2020. Fans will be hoping Daniel Farke can mastermind a repeat of that campaign.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Leeds, and the other promoted clubs have a chance at survival if they make some changes to their style:

“Yes, they do. I think what they’ve got to do is to work out a strategy, is how they’re going to play the football.’

“I think we saw last season the, for want of a better phrase, the tippy-tappy build-from-the-back routine that some clubs who’d just been promoted tried to adopt. You get found out too easily at the Premier League because it’s brutal in terms of punishing mistakes. So, I think if you go to grind out results, it won’t be pretty, but some sensible spends in terms of players, utilising the loan market as well.”

How much do Leeds need to spend this summer?

Last season saw all three clubs spend more than £80million. There was a mix of recruitment; some preferred Premier League experience, while others recruited from the Championship.

Looking at this table from Transfermarkt, the reported £100million transfer budget for Leeds United could be enough to survive this year.
