The roof of Manchester City's North Stand started coming down this week as work continues on the stadium expansion. Work is continuing through the summer with the aim of opening with the new capacity later in the 2025/26 season.

City are increasing the capacity of their ground as part of a major redevelopment intended to make the space a destination all year round. With Co-Op Live now well up and running behind the North Stand, a new fanpark, hotel, museum and club shop are all part of improving facilities at the Etihad.

Of most concern to fans is the stadium itself though, with the North Stand following the South Stand in getting an extra tier added onto it. Work has been ongoing since 2023 and this summer sees the key task of removing the roof in time for the pitch to be laid again for the new season.

Drone footage captured by CP Overview this week showed the start of the roof coming down as City look to meet a key deadline this summer that won't have any impact on the new campaign for Pep Guardiola and his players.

City are away on the opening weekend of the Premier League season but are at home to Spurs the following week and have United in September as well as the start of Champions League games.

“We’ve got a fairly tough few weeks ahead,” Sisk project director Ian Kasher told Construction News last month. “The old roof needs to be out in four weeks before the new one can be fully fitted, and then the cladding and floodlights will need to be added.

“The groundsmen need four weeks to relay the pitch, so we only have six weeks to remove the existing roof and then the groundsmen take over; there is a one-week buffer in case we have bad weather. Alternate bays of the roof will be stripped in situ leaving six sections of braced bays, each weighing 45 tonnes to be rotated down to pitch level and lifted out”

City are expected to finish work on the stand midway through the 2025/26 season, with test events necessary before the new top tier can open fully. The Blues have not released any ticket details for the additional seats, but will hope that they will be able to have a 61,000-capacity before the end of the campaign.

Fans are keen for the club to make the most of the configuration for the new stand once complete, with this the last real opportunity to change the way a matchday feels for supporters that will be felt for years to come.
