Anthony Gordon sends Marc Guehi message amid Newcastle United & Liverpool interest

Liverpool are set to rival Newcastle United for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace have opened talks with Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande amid uncertainty over Marc Guehi’s future.

Newcastle United tried to sign the Palace skipper last summer after he was identified as Eddie Howe’s top centre-back target. However, they were ultimately left frustrated as the Eagles remained firm on their £70million asking price.

Guehi is now into the final year of his contract and, as it stands, won’t be extending his stay at Selhurst Park. As per the Daily Telegraph, Palace will cash in on the 24-year-old and are confident he will fetch a major fee.

Liverpool lining up bid for Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi

Newcastle retain a strong interest in Guehi, who scored an own goal in both games against them last season. However, there are now fears they could miss out to Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Telegraph claims Arne Slot’s side are expected to make a “significant” offer for the 23-capped England international following the imminent sale of academy graduate Jarrel Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Reports suggest the 22-year-old is joining the Bundesliga club for £35m.

Twelve months ago, Newcastle had an approach for Quansah rejected as part of a player-swap deal involving Anthony Gordon. Joe Gomez was discussed instead.

The Magpies desperately needed to raise funds to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and Gordon moving to his boyhood club was a real possibility before the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively.

While speculation surrounds his future, Guehi is currently on holiday in New York and on Thursday, the same day news of Liverpool’s potential bid broke, uploaded photos from his trip to Instagram.

The comment section is inundated with Liverpool fans urging Guehi to join their club while Gordon’s clapping emoji response has already attracted some attention.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner cast doubt over Guehi’s future earlier this year when admitting he was unsure if the defender would sign a new contract.

And it appears the Eagles are taking no risks in terms of leaving themselves short with BBC Sport revealing talks are underway with Sporting Lisbon for Diomande.

Diomande moved to Portugal from FC Midtjylland in 2023 and is now viewed as one of Europe’s most highly-rated defenders having been tracked by multiple European clubs. But contrary to reports, NewcastleWorld understands Newcastle are not interested in the Ivorian.

BBC reports that Diomande is valued at around £40m, a fee that would smash Palace’s current transfer record of £32m paid to Liverpool for Christian Benteke nine years ago.
