Newcastle United are still in a 'much stronger position' to recruit this summer.

That is according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire following a quiet start to the window for Newcastle after Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all made significant early moves.

Eddie Howe has stressed the need for speed internally because the best options will 'usually move quite quickly', but rivals like Manchester United and Chelsea still able to offer significantly more in wages for players like Bryan Mbeumo and Liam Delap respectively.

There is still plenty of time left, of course, and Newcastle CEO Darren Eales previously explained how it 'gets a bit easier when you've had a good year like we've had to invest' as the housework the Magpies carried out in each of the last two windows still counts towards the new PSR cycle, which resets on July 1.

Newcastle, as a result, are in a far better position to strengthen with more than £70m in losses from the previous cycle also dropping out of the new accounting period.

However, while reeling off a list of the Premier League's healthiest PSR clubs, Rio Ferdinand bizarrely claimed that Newcastle only had '£8m to spend', which was certainly not how Maguire saw it.

"I think that's really harsh on Newcastle," he said. "I've got them far better in my calculations than those figures being quoted.

"Newcastle had three very quiet windows and the initial spending that was associated with the club when PIF acquired Newcastle is dropping out of the equation.

"I think Newcastle are in a much stronger position although it could be argued what they should be signing over the course of the summer is Bruno and [Alexander] Isak on bigger, longer contracts to make sure that they protect the quality of the squad that they have already got."

Digging deeper, Ferdinand appeared to be glancing at a list of estimates from the Athletic of projected pre-tax losses allowable under PSR rules for the year ending June 30, 2025.

However, the table in fact estimated that Newcastle could afford to lose £83m pre-tax for the current three-year cycle rather than the black-and-whites only having £8m to spend.
