Arrowheadlines: Kareem Hunt named one of NFLs best ‘luxury’ players

Short-yardage running back

Kareem Hunt, RB,Kansas City Chiefs

The league’s best back in short yardage is about to become a luxury with an expensive contract in Los Angeles. If rumors hold true and Kyren Williams gets a new deal with the Rams, coach Sean McVay & Co. will be locking up a back who has gone 39-of-45 (86.7%) in converting third or fourth down with 1 or 2 yards to go over the past two seasons. He is more than just a short-yardage back, but he has been particularly valuable in that role for the Rams.

Limiting this pick to backs who aren’t standouts in other ways, the best option is Hunt, who was forced into a lead role with the Chiefs last season after Isiah Pacheco went down and rookie Carson Steele fumbled away his opportunity. Hunt wasn’t great, but the one thing he did well was convert in short yardage. He went 15-of-18 (83.3%) in those situations, one year after he went 15-of-20 (75%) in those same spots for the Browns.

Doing that for an offense that relied heavily on converting third downs and wasn’t willing to run Patrick Mahomes on sneaks was a critical piece of the puzzle for Kansas City. With Pacheco back to full health and free agent Elijah Mitchell joining the mix, it would be a surprise if the Chiefs relied on Hunt in a featured role again in 2025. However, he could still be a useful third running back in the right situations.

OT -Josh Simmons

Ohio State

Kansas City Chiefs

DRAFTED: Round 1, No. 32 overall

Throughout the pre-draft process, myriad analysts espoused the same take: If Josh Simmons had not torn his patellar tendon last October, he’d be the first offensive tackle selected. He has the look of a classic blind-side protector, as a smooth athlete with the requisite size and length, but the aforementioned knee injury isn’t one to be overlooked. This kind of rupture carries long-term concerns, with recovery rates varying on a case-by-case basis. That said, Simmons appears to be checking every box in his rehab, including participating in team drills this month. And his work ethic consistently draws praise from Andy Reid: “He’s one of those guys that you gotta kinda kick out of the building.” Roller-coaster RT Jawaan Taylor has one year of guaranteed money left on his deal, and Kansas City gave free-agent LT Jaylon Moore decent loot in March, but if Simmons is healthy, the rookie has the raw talent to boost the Chiefs’ bookend blocking in Year 1.

Fantasy Football Rankings 2025: Tight end tiers | PFF

Travis Kelce has finished as the overall TE1 seven times in his NFL career, including as recently as when he tied for that spot in 2023 with LaPorta. However, coming out of 2024, Kelce’s expectations should be more tempered, even though he finished as the overall TE5. He also set a new career low in PFF grade (71.7), receiving grade (72.2), touchdowns (four), yards per reception (9.1) and yards per route run (1.49). He also took a back seat as the team’s top receiving option behind RasheeRice (when Rice was in the lineup), and it appears that Rice will be back this year. All signs point to another year of declining production for Kelce as he enters Year 12 of his NFL career and turns 36 years old, which is as expected, even for future Hall of Famers.

Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes May Be Fantasy Football’s Most Overvalued QB

To be clear, Patrick Mahomes is as phenomenal a quarterback as the NFL has seen in...maybe ever. It’s entirely possible he will go down as the greatest signal-caller the league has seen.

Based off recent performance, though, drafting the 29-year-old as the sixth quarterback off the board is wishful thinking at best.

Last year, Mahomes was seventh in the NFL in passing yards, ninth in passing touchdowns and finished outside the top 10 at the position. The year before that, he was sixth in passing yards, eighth in touchdown passes and eighth in fantasy points.

Having a healthy Rashee Rice back at wide receiver should help, but it goes past just injuries at wide receiver. The Chiefs have undergone something of a shift in offensive philosophy the past couple of years, and there has been more running the ball and short passes and less gripping and ripping the ball all over the field.

They care about winning games and getting back to another Super Bowl, not posting gaudy statistics.

And Mahomes is more likely to come up short of ADP than to exceed it.

Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders cited for driving 101 mph | ESPN

An officer for the Strongsville (Ohio) Police Department stopped Sanders at 12:24 a.m. for driving 41 mph over the posted 60 mph speed limit in his black Dodge TRX truck, according to records.

Sanders, 23, a projected first-round pick who was selected by the Browns after falling to the fifth round of this year’s draft, must either pay a $250 fine for the fourth-degree misdemeanor or fight the ticket in Strongsville Mayor’s Court on July 3.

Five-time Pro Bowl LB C.J. Mosley retiring after 11 years split between Ravens, Jets | NFL.com

Mosley is retiring from the NFL after 11 years split between the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets, the linebacker announced on social media. CBS Sports originally reported Mosley’s retirement.

“Today, it is time to wake up from my childhood dream and share it with the next generation,” Mosley said toward the end of his retirement video. “I spent my whole life and career building my legacy. Now it’s time to start a new chapter with new dreams.”

Mosley steps away from football with 1,083 tackles, 40 QB hits, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns. A pivotal piece on both his NFL teams, he compiled seven seasons with 100-plus tackles, falling under the century mark only once during campaigns in which he played double-digit games.

Chiefs News: Rashee Rice, Josh Simmons to be ready for training camp

Reid added that given his recovery progress, Simmons could potentially start Week 1 for the Chiefs — if he can win the job against veteran Jaylon Moore.

“You can see [Simmons’] athletic ability; you can see his want-to,” said Reid. “He’s got a great attitude. He’s approached everything the right way, plus a little bit extra. You could tell if you just want to look at his rehab, you can see that he had a mindset that, ‘I’m going to get in there. It’s not going to be training camp. It’s going to be now.’”

On Wednesday, Simmons told reporters he is sometimes rehabbing two or three times a day to be ready.

“He worked his tail off to get there,” continued Reid of Simmons. “So you respect that part of it. He’s done a nice job in there, he’s worked well, and we’ll just see. We’ll see what training camp does. Some of it is different when things are flying fast up there, and you’ve got full contact and pads on. We’ll see how he does.”

During Andy Reid's Hall of Fame Induction, the Associated Press and PFWA should be required to give an explanation as to why during a run where he won 3 Super Bowls, coached in 5 and had ZERO losing seasons, Andy didn't get a single Coach of the Year award. https://t.co/ba3Tb1omBf
