Thunder One Win Away from First NBA Championship

The Oklahoma City Thunder are just one win away from capturing their first NBA title since the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008. Formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, the team won a championship in 1979, but this would mark the first title for the city of Oklahoma City.

Finals MVP Race

NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is leading the 2025 NBA Playoffs in total points, while his partner in the front line Jalen Williams has made a strong case for Finals MVP honors after scoring 40 points in Game 5 to give the Thunder a 3–2 lead in the NBA Finals.

Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 32.4 points through five Finals games, and Williams is contributing 25.8 points per game. Although these two have been the standout performers for head coach Mark Daigneault’s team, it has been a collective effort. Chet Holmgren is nearly averaging a double-double with 13 points and almost 10 rebounds per game, while veteran Alex Caruso has emerged as a crucial X-factor off the bench, adding 12 points per game and providing valuable championship experience.

Eyeing Game 6

“We want to win Game 6,” said Daigneault. “But the most important thing we need to do to win tomorrow is to prepare and focus on playing the first possession really well—then the next possession, and the next one.

That’s how we try to approach a game, a playoff series, and every single day. If you do that, you can put your head on the pillow at night knowing you gave it everything you have.”

If necessary, Game 7 will be played Sunday at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. However, the Thunder could end their title drought with a win on the road at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
