Green Bay Packers have released Jaire Alexander, a move that saved them around $17 million. Was that a move meant to accommodate Zach Tom who is due for his first pay day?

The 26-year-old offensive tackle has been a dominant force in the team’s starting line-up in the past seasons and many seem him as an integral part of Matt LaFleur’s squad going forward. However, the contract negotiations have been stalled, leaving many wondering whether the team have a good plan for him.

General manager Brian Gutekunst signaled that there’s nothing to worry about Tom as both parties are on the same page for his new deal.

“We’ve had really healthy conversations with Zach about locking him up and certainly that’s something we’d like to do,” Gutekunst said.

What the team is doing now is being patient on their working relationship.

“These things take time and they never happen very quickly. He’s been a really good player for us since the time he got here, done everything right by us, so hopefully we’ll get there soon.”

Zach Tom has eyes on the prize

Tom may be gunning for a new contract and better one at that but his commitment to the Packers remains the same.

He expressed confidence early this month that he will receive a new deal.

“I’m trying not to worry about the contract situation. I’m just trying to do what’s best for the team. And being here with the guys, I think that’s worth a lot more . . . the contract situation will take care of itself,” he said.

What he is more concerned this offseason is to become the better version of himself as he aims to become the best player in his position.

LaFleur thinks such goal is not impossible to achieve and that’s the reason why they not changing his position.

“Yeah, I think that’s the plan, absolutely,” LaFleur said.

“That’s where he’s kind of found his home, but I think what’s great about him is if you do have something that happens, it gives you some flexibility up front.”
