Browns stadium fight heads to court

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Haslam Sports Group is hoping a Cuyahoga County judge will dismiss a civil lawsuit filed against them by the City of Cleveland today, that claims the Browns violated the Modell Law and are in breach of contract with the City.

The hearing is Friday morning in front of Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Lauren Moore.

The civil suit is an attempt to prohibit HSG, owner of the Cleveland Browns Football Team, from moving to a new dome stadium in Brook Park when their lease at Huntington Bank Field expires.

The City of Cleveland filed the civil lawsuit in January with three counts: violation of the Modell Law, breach of contract, and declaratory judgement and injunctive relief.

According to the civil lawsuit, the City of Cleveland claims they lose $30M in economic output annually and $11M in annual tax revenue for every year the Browns are not in playing downtown Cleveland.

In October, the Browns filed a federal lawsuit to clarify their legal rights because the uncertainty caused by the City’s threat to invoke the Modell Law is complicating the team’s efforts to consider and pursue the opportunity in Brook Park.
