The Club World Cup has apparently been a disappointment so far for FIFA. Crowds have been smaller than expected, TV ratings are low, and frankly, many of the matches have been boring, to say the least.
In theory, I think the expanded format for this tournament was a great idea, however, if you are going to crown the best club in the world, then why not invite the best 32 clubs in the world?
Yes, I understand trying to be geographically diverse and invite clubs worldwide, however, the 32 clubs invited for this round of the competition do not represent the best 32 clubs in the world.
Case in point, Bayern Munich 10, Auckland City 0. Come on, really? Why would anyone buy a ticket for this match. especially in the United State where soccer is just catching on? Americans, who enjoy the game know and even support the big clubs, will not care about Auckland City?
Obviously, there are more examples of bad match-ups, but as the tournament progresses into the knockout stages the competition should become much more even.
How does this get fixed? FIFA should develop a worldwide ranking system for all top flight clubs around the globe. Then when the tournament approaches again in four years they would invite the top 32 ranked clubs. There is a world ranking program for the national clubs, so why not the domestic clubs as well? As an Arsenal fan, wouldn’t you like to see where the Gunners line-up in the world rankings? I would.
Sure, smaller clubs in smaller nations will probably not make the final 32, but if you want to crown a real world champion then this format would provide a much more compelling atmosphere and support for the Club World Cup.
Just a thought.
Cheers.
