Leicester City, Southampton set sights on departing Everton veteran

Leicester City and Southampton were both relegated back to the Championship at the first time of asking after rising to the Premier League together in 2024. LCFC lifted the title, while the Saints won the play-offs.

However, neither were winners in the 2024/25 season. While the Foxes finished 13 points off safety in 18th, Southampton limped their way to a dismal 12 points, just one more than Derby County’s record-worst Premier League tally ever.

Nonetheless, the focus now turns to the push for promotion back to the top flight, and both clubs will have eyes on new additions.

Now, Football Insider has claimed one player of interest to both Leicester City and Southampton is goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The 38-year-old is set to be available on a free transfer with Everton opting against renewing his deal, and LCFC and the Saints are considering moves as they look to add depth and experience to their goalkeeping ranks.

Begovic would likely be viewed as second choice at both clubs and on a free transfer, he could be a low cost and low risk addition this summer.

A dependable backup

Leicester City and Southampton are unlikely to be viewing 38-year-old Begovic as an option for their starting XIs ahead of next season, but he could prove a solid backup for whoever starts in goal at the respective clubs.

As far as experience goes, there are few in the second tier who will be able to rival him. Begovic has 63 caps for Bosnia at international level and has played over 450 games in his career.

The majority of those came with Stoke City and Bournemouth, but he boasts the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan, Portsmouth, QPR and more among his former clubs.

Changes in goal at Leicester City and Southampton

It seems likely that both Leicester City and Southampton starts next season with new number ones.

LCFC shot-stopper Mads Hermansen made a decent impression in the Premier League as he tried his best behind an abysmal defence, while Aaron Ramsdale will not be dropping to the Championship with Southampton.

Daniel Iversen and Danny Ward are leaving the Foxes so new cover will be required there. However, it could be that Gavin Bazunu fights to reclaim his place at St. Mary’s after returning to fitness over the second half of last season.
