Former Premier League footballer Lee Clark has been declared bankrupt, new documents have disclosed.

The 52-year-old played for Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham during his career, before going into management and working as a TV pundit. The Magpies favourite made 265 appearances for his beloved Toon over two spells at the club, scoring 28 goals.

But the former midfielder's finances are now in the spotlight after a bankruptcy order was filed with the London Gazette. The date of the petition was November 7 last year, but the bankruptcy order was made on June 10.

The petitioner was a finance company called One Stop Business based in York. Wallsend-born Clark - whose son Bobby played for Liverpool - is listed on the order as living at a £2m property in Jesmond, Newcastle.

Clark began his career at Newcastle before making a high profile switch to Sunderland in 1997. But he angered Sunderland fans following a controversial incident during his time under Peter Reid, when he was spotted wearing a T-shirt bearing a derogatory slogan aimed at 'Sad Mackem B*******' at the 1999 FA Cup final.

He did not play for Sunderland again and Clark later re-joined Newcastle after a stint with Fulham. Clark had been a popular and highly-rated player during his time at Sunderland and was part of the team that won promotion from the old Division One during the 1998/99 season. Clark had even captained the club at times.

He went on to become a coach at Newcastle under Glenn Roeder, then worked with him again at Norwich, before moving into management.

Clark enjoyed a successful spell at Huddersfield Town, before becoming manager of Birmingham City, where his son Bobby was on the books.
