Bryan Mbeumo in action for Brentford.
Manchester United are attempting to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
Manchester United are working behind-the-scenes to make further additions to their squad.
So far, Ruben Amorim and key figures upstairs at Old Trafford have welcomed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for a £62.5million transfer fee. They've also attempted to strike up a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo but - as things stand - that pursuit has not had the same end result as Brazil star Cunha.
Mbeumo was the subject of a failed bid, but the club are expected to return to the negotiating table. Signing a striker remains a main priority, but outgoings are also expected.
The likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are candidates to leave Old Trafford this summer. The Manchester Evening News reported last month that Garnacho would be sold if a suitable offer is tabled and the Argentina star has featured regularly on the rumour mill.
With that in mind, The Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest headlines.
Bryan Mbeumo latest
According to the I Paper, United will have to increase their bid for Mbeumo to convince Brentford to cash-in on their prized asset. The Cameroon international has been the subject of an £55million offer from the Reds.
Mbeumo has indicated his preferred move would be to Old Trafford, with United still considered frontrunners for his signature. However, journalist Duncan Castles has claimed on The Transfers Podcast that Tottenham may now be seen as a more attractive option.
The opportunity to play in the Champions League and reunite with Thomas Frank are said to be key factors.
The Manchester Evening News says: As the current frontrunners, it's crucial for United to act quickly amid fresh interest from Tottenham. Missing out to Spurs would be a major blow, especially with the ball having been in United's court for some time and Mbeumo reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford. It should be a no-brainer - either meet Brentford's valuation or risk losing him, which could have a major impact next season.
Interest in striker 'withdrawn'
United have ,reportedly, withdrawn their interest in signing free agent Jonathan David this summer. Corriere dello Sport claim Juventus now appears to be a potential destination for the Canada international, who is available on a free transfer.
The report states that United, along with Napoli, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain, all "seem to have withdrawn" from the race to sign the striker. David is said to be seeking a salary of around €7million (£6m) per year, after leaving Lille on a free transfer following five years at the club.
The Manchester Evening News says: Considering that signing a new striker is one of United's priorities this summer, the decision to pass on David does come as a bit of a surprise. However, with reports suggesting he is seeking around €7m (£6m) per year, that figure may be viewed as too high for a squad player - especially as United aim to reset their wage structure and avoid repeating past mistakes.
That said, I'm not sure David would have been an ideal attacking option for Amorim. He isn't particularly strong in aerial duels, and his performances against top-tier opposition in Ligue 1 were inconsistent - something that could have become a bigger issue in the Premier League.
Jadon Sancho 'talks'
Juventus have re-entered the race for Sancho - opening "preliminary talks" with United over a transfer - according to Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia).
However, they are not alone in their pursuit with Napoli also said to have made "early moves" for the winger. Juve, meanwhile, have begun discussions with United directly while rivals Napoli have reputedly had more contact with the player over a possible move.
Juventus showed an interest in Sancho before he moved on loan to Chelsea last summer. But after Chelsea opted against signing Sancho on a permanent deal, United are now looking to offload the 25-year-old.
The Manchester Evening News says: Sanctioning a sale for Sancho should be high on United's priority list as they look to make further signings this summer. Based on his recent form and performances, it's difficult to see him having a future or succeeding at M16. A fresh start elsewhere, perhaps abroad, could be what he needs to reignite his career.
