Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi has been at the top of Newcastle United's wishlist for a while, but that could change quickly as Liverpool have set their sights on signing a new Premier League defender.
Now, some Chronicle Live readers say it's finally time to move on from the FA Cup-winning captain.
Eddie Howe is waiting on his first summer signing, and getting Guehi in - something that the club failed to do last year, not for lack of trying - would be the sort of statement signing that the club hope to make over the next few months.
Deals for Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo have passed him by, and negotiations are ongoing over Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, but Howe wants at least two new faces in through the doors in time for pre-season training.
Guehi has had another good year at Palace since the Magpies' last attempt to lure him away, and with 12 months left on his contract and little hope of his current club convincing him to stay, this is the time for a transfer. Liverpool are now in the mix for Guehi's signature, [have just sold young centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpools-marc-guehi-stance-transfer-31895951), leaving them short at the back.
The Reds will be mindful of how much they've spent so far this summer, and they are known to want a young, high-potential player as their back-up option, so it's not a done deal. Newcastle must move quickly if they're serious about securing Guehi once and for all.
There are plenty who aren't convinced that Guehi is worth the effort, however - whether it's the player himself, or the apparent pace of Newcastle's transfer activity. Reader **Tom NYC** says: "All this Guehi talk is like death by a thousand cuts!
"He's not coming, I would have thought that was obvious to all by now. And yet we keep dragging it out. We keep taking the whip to the deceased equine. Please god let it end."
Commenter **Bones4230** writes: "I've seen sleeping sloths move faster than Newcastle this transfer window. Absolutely shambolic window so far.
"Previous windows, we knew there would be no incoming transfers due to PSR. But this time, we were told, we have money and we will buy new players, well, all I see are our competitors buying players that we were interested in, meanwhile in Newcastle... tumbleweeds..."
**Johnnypicasso** says: "Guehi, the man who got outpaced by Jamie Vardy, and made multiple mistakes all season? And let's not forget the own goals. He lacks presence and height for a centre-back, I wouldn't pay more them £15 million for him."
**Pauline1** writes: "I wouldn't have bothered with Guehi anyway - either he obviously doesn't want to come here anyway, or Crystal Palace are digging their heels in for even MORE money. At the rate we are going, this is going to be yet ANOTHER blank transfer window, & even the Champions League doesn't seem to be an attraction to some!!"
**Davros92001** makes a point about Newcastle chasing "proven Premier League" talent: "We should not be looking at Pedro, Guehi and Elanga. Each would command a huge transfer fee, and in truth, none of them are top class. They are ok, but £70m for an ok player?
"We need to be looking to emulate what Bournemouth and Brighton have done in recent years, in signing unknown talent and making them into great players. We also need to buy AND sell, to keep money coming in. Top clubs sell for profit, but looking at our squad, who away from the starting XI is going to raise any funds?"
**Have your say! Should Newcastle leave Guehi to Liverpool if they announce their interest? Or should the club be in a position to fend off rivals? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.**
