49ers rookie linebacker gets thumbs-up report after recent injury

Offseason injuries are always concerning, especially when they wind up being the non-contact variety.

And, considering how much stock the San Francisco 49ers put into their rookie 2025 NFL Draft class, having one of the top-selected players from last April has to be a major concern if he appears on some injury news.

Such is the case with third-round rookie linebacker Nick Martin, who apparently suffered a fractured thumb while lifting weights, according to Noah Furtado of the San Francisco Chronicle (h/t David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone).

Of the freak accident, Furtado wrote:

"After a video surfaced in which star offensive tackle Trent Williams said that Martin had broken his thumb during a workout, many 49ers fans on social media assumed the worst," Furtado wrote. "Martin had missed most of his final season at Oklahoma State with a knee injury that likely affected his drafted stock."

The SF Standard's David Lombardi shared the aforementioned video below:

49ers shouldn't worry about Nick Martin's injury

While painful, it doesn't appear as if Martin will miss any time between now and the beginning of Niners training camp in late July. Per the report, the rookie didn't require surgery and is expected to make a quick recovery.

San Francisco used a third-round pick on the former Oklahoma State backer, primarily aiming to replace now-Denver Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who departed via free agency last March.

The hard-hitting Martin is in a direct competition with third-year pro Dee Winters for a starting job alongside All-Pro Fred Warner. This might be one of the jucier position/depth battles the 49ers have on their slate during camp as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 season.

Fortunately for the rookie, he won't miss crucial snaps when the Niners return to Levi's Stadium later next month.
