Man Utd identify effective Ederson alternative for Ruben Amorim after being priced out of £63.7m Atalanta midfielder

Manchester United could switch their attention to a new option for Ruben Amorim after being put off by the price tag for Atalanta defensive midfielder Ederson.

Ederson has been linked with Manchester United and the Red Devils are keen to bolster the midfield in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder has impressed at Atalanta and the Red Devils-linked Ederson is under contract with the Serie A club until 2027.

Ederson made 49 appearances for the Italian club in the 2024-25 campaign and the Brazil international has scored five times and registered two assists for the club.

The Brazil midfielder has been with Atalanta since 2022 after the Serie A side signed him from Italian side Salernitana, with Ederson attracting the interest of United.

However, Atalanta are expected to play hardball over any approaches for United target Ederson and the club are expected to demand a fee of around £63.7m.

Man Utd could now try to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich after the price tag on Atalanta midfielder Ederson

Manchester United’s spending power is limited and the Red Devils need to be careful around the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Red Devils will now likely be required to sell players and free up their wages before United could make any major big-money transfers this summer.

According to GiveMeSport, United have now set their attention on Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha as an alternative option to Atalanta’s Ederson.

Bayern Munich dropped a hefty £42.3m transfer fee, including a further £4.2m in add-ons, to sign Joao Palhinha from Premier League side Fulham last summer.

However, the 29-year-old Portugal international has struggled to establish himself at the Bundesliga champions and United have now been linked with Palhinha.

Man Utd’s main option for signing Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich amid searching for an alternative to Atalanta star Ederson

Joao Palhinha is under contract with Bayern Munich until 2028 and the ex-Fulham star only managed 24 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 season.

GiveMeSport reports that United are exploring a potential loan for Palhinha and there have been internal talks between the Red Devils and Bayern over a transfer.

Bayern were open to selling the Portugal midfielder in a permanent transfer and valued him at around £30m amid the interest from United in Palhinha.

However, the reigning German champions are now believed to be considering a loan option for Palhinha to help the former Fulham star discover his best form.

Ruben Amorim is in need of another midfield option and United are reportedly open to selling Alejandro Garnacho to secure the funds for the loan signing of Palhinha.
