Talks held: Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool now more likely to sign 'elite' striker than Isak

Liverpool have held talks to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and there is a possibility he does move to Anfield this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano speaking on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast.

The Reds have had a busy summer so far with Jeremie Frimpong sealing a move to Merseyside, while on Friday Florian Wirtz passed his medical ahead of a British transfer record switch, while Romano also provided the 'here we go' for Milos Kerkez to link up with Arne Slot too.

But FSG aren't done there. The striker position could be one of their next priorities - especially if Darwin Nunez leaves as is expected.

Liverpool 'Speak to Agents' of Ekitike

A move to Anfield is a 'possibility'

While talk of Liverpool and Alexander Isak has resurfaced in recent days, Romano believes that Ekitike is more likely and is the name to look out for should the Reds make the move to strengthen the number nine position.

The Reds have spoken to the agents of the Frenchman - along with Chelsea and Manchester United - ahead of the possibility of Nunez and potentially even Luis Diaz leaving this summer.

Romano believes the transfer could happen, speaking on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast:

Liverpool would try to go for Isak [if he became available] but at the moment I don't have this feeling. The club too, from what I'm hearing, see it as a very, very difficult deal.

A name I can mention for Liverpool is still Hugo Ekitike at Eintracht Frankurt. Because if Darwin Nunez leaves, let's see what happens with Luis Diaz, but especially Darwin, and I see Darwin leaving this summer.

Well, I think for Ekitike this could be a possibility to go to Liverpool, because there were calls from Chelsea two weeks ago. Man United, in recent days, also made contact with the agents to understand the situation. But for Liverpool, this is also a possibility.

Liverpool also spoke to the agents. Also, Liverpool considered Ekitike an interesting opportunity. And so that's the name I would keep in their shortlist.

The French striker is in demand

Ekitike - who has been described as being 'elite' - has enjoyed an impressive goalscoring season with the Bundesliga outfit following a successful loan spell previously.

His quality of finishing, 6 ft 3 frame and speed make him an attractive proposition in an era when centre-forwards are harder to come by, with his performances clearly catching the eye of the Premier League elite.

It will be interesting to see if any Premier League club does eventually take the plunge on Ekitike, but a move to Liverpool this summer certainly can't be ruled out, as Romano says.
