49ers' biggest cap hit entering 2025 isn't the player you think

The San Francisco 49ers both saved and spent a lot of money this offseason.

By parting ways with aging, increasingly expensive veterans at the start of the league new year, the Niners cut costs and trimmed actual spend. Sure, this might have hit the pocketbook in dead money, but general manager John Lynch actually created a lot of cap space via those means, too.

And San Francisco didn't hesitate to extend three of its biggest stars -- tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner and quarterback Brock Purdy -- with the newfound cash.

Purdy, who earned a five-year, $265 million extension to ensure he's the franchise's signal-caller for the long haul, is now the highest-paid player in 49ers history.

However, he's not the biggest cap hit entering 2025. In fact, the quarterback doesn't even crack the top five in that department.

Trent Williams costs the 49ers more than anyone else in 2025

The No. 1 highest-paid player on the Niners roster might not be who you'd expect.

It's All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, poised to earn up to $21,141,955 this season, according to Over the Cap.

As for the top five, here you go:

OT Trent Williams: $21.14 million

DE Nick Bosa: $20.43 million

LB Fred Warner: $16.06 million

TE George Kittle: $14.21 million

WR Brandon Aiyuk: $9.92 million

Purdy actually ranks seventh on that list for potential earnings at $9.12 million, and it's important to acknowledge 2025 would have been the final year of his original rookie contract, signed back in 2022.

For those wholly unfamiliar with NFL contracts, terms and cap hits differ from year to year. In Purdy's case, his cap hit jumps to nearly $25 million next year and then a notable $72.5 million in 2029.

Williams, meanwhile, is slated to earn up to $39 million in 2026.
