Keith Hackett has given his verdict on Nicolas Jackson’s horrendous red card at the Club World Cup.

The Chelsea striker was named on the bench for the 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in the Club World Cup (June 20) after being replaced in the starting line-up by new signing Liam Delap.

While the Blues had taken an early lead through Pedro Neto, Flamengo leveled the game after 62 minutes, which led to Enzo Maresca making some changes, with Jackson coming on to replace the former Ipswich star.

Unfortunately for the Senegal international, the impact that he made when coming onto the pitch was not the one that he would have hoped for.

Before receiving a red card on Friday, Jackson had faced questions over his Chelsea future, following the addition of Delap.

Depending on other results, the Stamford Bridge club may need to win against Tunisian club Esperance in their final Club World Cup group game on Wednesday, 25 June, to progress to the knockout stages.

Nicolas Jackson sent off for shocking challenge

Introduced after 64 minutes, Jackson’s outing against Flamengo at the Club World Cup couldn’t have gone much worse.

Chelsea conceded a second goal just one minute earlier to make it 2-1, before the Senegalese striker put in a shocker of a challenge on Ayrton Lucas.

Lunging at the ball, Jackson went in with his studs up and caught the Flamengo defender on the shin, with the Brazilian left writhing on the floor in pain.

Unsurprisingly, the referee took mere seconds to make his decision as he brandished a straight red card and sent Jackson off just four minutes after coming on the pitch.

Keith Hackett gives verdict on Nicolas Jackson red card

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett gave his insight as to why Jackson could be facing a hefty punishment for his challenge.

He said: “There is no place in football for this type of challenge the reaction and speed of the issuing of a red card was a terrific piece of officiating.

“The referee’s prompt showing of the red card ensured that it reduced any possibility of a mass confrontation.

“This unacceptable action by the offender should result in a minimum five match ban.”
