French side AS Monaco have made an enquiry about Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to Sky in Italy.
Monaco want to strengthen their goalkeeping department and are exploring the conditions of a deal for Onana.
Despite claims that manager Ruben Amorim ‘enjoys a warm working relationship’ with the Cameroonian, United would be open to selling him.
The 29-year-old has been poor since joining from Inter Milan for a fee of £43.8 million in the summer of 2023. He made five errors leading to goals across all contributions last term.
Sky in Italy report that ‘Marco Carnesecchi is a profile’ that United are evaluating in the event of Onana’s exit.
The Red Devils have made ‘an initial contact with the goalkeeper’s agents but are yet to approach Atalanta.
Atalanta would only sell the Italian for a considerable fee, reportedly between €45m and €50m.
Carnesecchi would be an upgrade on Onana
The Italian goalie outperformed the Man United goalkeeper last season.
Carnesecchi recorded a 72 percent save percentage and prevented 2.7 goals across all competitions for Atalanta.
By contrast, Onana had a save percentage of 68.8 percent and a goals prevented figure of -0.4, meaning he conceded more goals than expected.
Carnesecchi’s ability to play with a high-line defence adds to his appeal. He recorded 1.40 actions outside the penalty area per 90 last term, while Onana registered 0.77.
The Italian goalkeeper also handles crosses better than his Cameroonian counterpart. Last season, he stopped 6.1 percent of the crosses he faced, while the latter stopped 5.5 percent.
Carnesecchi is also comfortable with the ball, having completed 73.6 percent of his passes, which is better than Onana’s 73.3.
In addition, the Atalanta star is just 24, meaning United would be signing a young shot-stopper who can be their first-choice for years to come.
With Monaco interested in Onana, United should consider cashing in on him to pursue a younger alternative like Carnesecchi.
