Arsenal summer transfer business continues to gather momentum, with Leicester City midfielder Bilal El Khannouss emerging as a reported target. However, mixed reports about the Gunners’ interest have led to uncertainty over the Moroccan international’s future.

According to Africa Foot, Arsenal are leading the race to sign the 21-year-old, with personal terms allegedly agreed between the player’s camp and the North London club. The outlet claims that negotiations are now focused on finalising a transfer fee with Leicester City, who were relegated to the Championship following a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League season.

El Khannouss is reportedly eager to secure a move away from the King Power Stadium in order to maintain his place in Morocco’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in December. His technical quality, positional versatility, and attacking instinct are said to have impressed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is keen on strengthening his midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

Despite those claims, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has disputed the story, stating on X that “no contact” has taken place between Arsenal and the player’s representatives as of June 20. Other sources have also played down the links, dismissing reports of an imminent deal as premature or inaccurate.

El Khannouss joined Leicester from Genk in August 2024 for a fee of £21 million and was one of the club’s standout performers during a turbulent campaign. He made 37 appearances across all competitions, recording three goals and six assists, and has drawn interest from several clubs including Wolves, who view him as a possible replacement for Matheus Cunha as well as Serie A and Bundesliga sides.

Leicester are believed to value El Khannouss at around £40 million, although reports suggest that an offer in the region of €30 million (£25.5 million) could be enough to strike a deal, given the club’s financial concerns following relegation. The midfielder’s contract runs until 2028, meaning the Foxes are under no immediate pressure to sell.

Arsenal’s potential move for El Khannouss fits into their wider strategy to refresh the midfield. The Gunners recently secured the £55 million signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, with Jorginho joining Flamengo and Thomas Partey’s future still unresolved. Arteta is reportedly keen to bring in young, creative talents to provide cover and competition for Martin Ødegaard and Ethan Nwaneri.

Sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be focusing on smart, strategic acquisitions, and El Khannouss, given his age, upside, and current club situation could prove a valuable long-term investment. However, Arsenal’s ability to pursue the Moroccan may depend on moving out fringe players like Fábio Vieira, currently on loan at Porto, to free up squad space and funds.
