Sacramento Kings Free Agent Option: Ty Jerome

It’s that time of year, just a bit sooner than usual. With the NBA Finals headed to a seventh, final game 28 other teams have already began their offseasons.

Scott Perry, the newly announced general manager of the Sacramento Kings, is expected to have plenty of roster reshuffling ahead. And, just as they were under Monte McNair, the Kings are named in a sizeable handful of offseason rumors.

Working with the non-taxpayer mid-level exception this offseason (starting at roughly $14.1 million), Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus named the Kings as a potential landing spot for Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ty Jerome.

Selected by Philadelphia with the 24th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Jerome didn’t jump from the 76ers, Thunder, and Warriors in his first four seasons before landing in Cleveland.

Not long after joining the Cavaliers in 2023, Jerome went down with an ankle injury that eventually required surgery, causing him to effectively miss the entire season.

Last season, at 27 years old, Jerome found his niche and thrived in it. He was a bench spark plug working behind Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.

You could say he was Cleveland’s version of Malik Monk, even finishing third in Sixth Man of the Year voting behind Malik Beasley and Payton Pritchard, who won the award.

The 6’5 guard averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 19.9 minutes per game. But his most effective numbers lie in his efficiency.

Jerome made 51.6 percent of his field goal attempts last season, including 43.8 percent from three on 3.6 attempts per game.

You might recall his 28-point performance against the Miami Heat in game one.

While Monk can have stellar nights, his overall efficiency can’t rival Jerome’s ridiculous season. But it could be an outlier.

He’s expected to remain a top-tier shooter, but he still needs to prove he can maintain his status as a top-five shooter from range.

Monk’s advantage over Jerome comes in the form of playmaking, something that Perry desperately needs to find for his inherited roster.

Committing your entire mid-level expectation (if Jerome were to demand that) to another guard who doesn’t fill that void could be tough.

But, I think it’s important to monitor all options, considering how fast new holes can be created while others are filled.

If Monk were to be included in a deal, for example, Sacramento would quickly lack bench scoring. And then signing Ty Jerome could make sense.

That free agency money may be better spent on other players such as Malcolm Brogdon, D’Angelo Russell, or Larry Nance Jr.

It’s common knowledge at this point that the Sacramento Kings will be hunting for a new point guard in the coming weeks.

With free agency set to begin on June 30th, the Kings have already been linked to several options on both the free agent and trade market, but one NBA writer thinks that Sacramento could be an ideal fit for one guard who will be seeking a new deal this summer.

Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus predicts that Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ty Jerome will sign with the Kings in free agency, citing that Sacramento’s non-taxpayer mid-level exception ($12.8 million) could lure Jerome to the 916.
