Sesko must do something no Arsenal player has done for five years

Arsenal look to be placing their faith in Benjamin Sesko to solve their issues in front of goal.

Having failed to bring in a new frontman in either of the last two transfer windows, it looks as if the Gunners are going to spend big to bring in a new striker this time around.

Sesko appears to be the chosen one with the Gunners reportedly coming to a verbal agreement with the Slovenian over personal terms already, with just a fee to be negotiated with RB Leipzig for the transfer.

It has been a summer so far of either/or for Arsenal with Viktor Gyokeres the other striker heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Sesko comes with a big reputation and has been likened to Erling Haaland, given his stature, pace and goalscoring prowess, not to mention his rise from RB Salzburg, like the Manchester City man, to the Bundesliga and soon to the Premier League.

Gyokeres would have been the better choice were it down to straight numbers in front of goal, with the Swede outscoring Sesko considerably in the last two seasons. However, Gyokeres has been playing in the Portuguese league with Sporting CP, whereas Sesko has been in the much tougher German league.

Sesko has time on his side, five years younger than Gyokeres, and is a considerably more worthwhile asset in that regard. But strikers are paid to score goals and Arsenal will be looknig for the 22-year-old to do something no Gunners players has managed in the last five seasons.

Arsenal have finished as runners-up in the Premier League title race in each of the last three campaigns and are looknig to go one step better this time around.

Sesko will be key to making that happen as the focal point of Mikel Arteta's attack. He will have the weight of expectation on his shoulders because no Arsenal player has managed 20 goals in a Premier League season in the last five years.

In fact, no single player has managed more than 16 in one season in any of those campaigns.

Kai Havertz topped the pile with nine last term, with Bukayo Saka getting 16 in the 202324 season. Martin Odegaard notched 15 the year before, with Saka on 11 and Alexandre Lacazette on 13 the two years prior to that.

Sesko is only 22, but he does not have history on his side.

The Slovenian bagged 13 in 2024/25 and 14 in the 2022/23 campaign in the Bundesliga. As a young striker in a new league he cannot be expected to hit the ground running, but Arsenal may well need him to if they are to realise their Premier League title dream.
