The latest rumblings from Argentina this week claimed Manchester United had opened tentative talks with Villa over a deal. Martinez, it is claimed, is open to joining the Red Devils, even though they are not playing in Europe next season.
It perhaps says something the vast majority of reports about Martinez’s future have emanated from his homeland. Sources closer to the clubs involved are far more reserved.
All that can really be said for sure is, just as Villa insisted a month ago, no agreement for him to leave exists. Those tears after Tottenham, as was suspected at the time, were from a man who thinks he might depart. Nothing else, at this point, is certain.
That’s not to say it won’t happen but the summer is young and the market for Martinez far from straightforward.
