Newcastle United there first for U21s Euro talent – Others now trying to muscle in on transfer

Newcastle United have been credited with interest in SC Braga’s Roger since early June 2022. Around that time it was even reported the Magpies were [set to offer €20-25m](https://sportwitness.co.uk/newcastle-offer-signing-reach-e20-25m-youngster-pulverised-records/) for the then 16-year-old, an amount which appeared farcical.

It felt like there was a distinct attempt ongoing to hype the Braga winger, and encourage interest from other clubs. Newcastle have been linked repeatedly since, along with clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, Atlético Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, PSV and Ajax.

Earlier this year it was claimed Brentford were willing to pay Braga €15m to secure the now 19-year-old, with Newcastle United inevitably also said to be in contact for a potential deal.

Saturday’s edition of [O Jogo](http://ojogo.pt) reports on how the youngster is doing with Portugal’s U21 side, and how that is attracting transfer interest. He’s becoming increasingly important for Rui Jorge’s team at the U21 Euros and is combining well with Geovany Quenda, who has already been sold to Chelsea for around €50m.

O Jogo state: _‘The volume of offers and approaches has skyrocketed in recent days, directly related to this showcase and competition, even though Roger has already left aware of the famous English interests, such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle, while keeping other players on the lookout, such as Benfica and Atlético Madrid.’_

SC Braga are said to be referring to Roger’s €40m buyout clause, but Newcastle United will likely be able to negotiate a fixed fee down and increase it with bonuses. Whilst they may have been able to secure the youngster more cheaply a while ago, it’s questionable whether he would have had the same development if not at Braga.
