Incoming Villa talent shines on international duty with decisive display

Aston Villa are expected to complete the signing of striker Zepiqueno Redmond next month, and in another positive sign, the talented youngster impressed for the Netherlands U19s this week.

The 18-year-old is said to have completed his medical and agreed terms with Villa, and he will join us on a free transfer from Feyenoord when his current contract with the Dutch outfit expires at the end of the month.

Albeit it’s still very early in his career, Redmond has emerged as a real prospect over the past 12 months or so as he’s showcased his qualities as the focal point of an attack with his physicality, pace, ability to link things together and provide a goal threat in the final third.

It was seemingly enough to convince Villa to sign him and hopefully help him develop into a top-class forward under Unai Emery, and there is further evidence that it could prove to be an inspired signing of a young player with a big future ahead of him.

Redmond played a decisive role for the Netherlands U19s in their win over England U19s on Friday night, as he scored two goals, had an 87 percent passing accuracy, won four of eight ground duels and made two successful tackles.

It was enough to earn him the Man of the Match award, and as seen in the video below, he showed clinical finishing to bag a brace in a comprehensive win in the U19s European Championship meeting.

It remains unclear at this stage what the plan will be for Redmond, as ultimately sitting on the bench as back-up for Ollie Watkins all season doesn’t sound the smartest option for a young player who needs to play regularly to continue to develop and improve his game.

In turn, whether it’s starting off at youth level for us or being loaned out to play at a higher level on a more consistent basis, Villa will make the best decision for all concerned, and it’s hoped that Redmond is able to go on and have a successful career in a Villa shirt.

While it’s always ideal to develop young players and see them make a breakthrough for the first-team, Villa must continue to have one eye on our financial position in relation to PSR, and so if it proves to be a savvy pick-up on a free transfer to then sell for a significant profit further down the line, it’s hoped that Redmond continues to shine for club and country as it will ultimately benefit both parties.
