Chelsea could be in line for a windfall of more than £8million this summer, thanks to Liverpool's latest transfer manoeuvre.

The Blues will no doubt welcome any financial boost to help them adhere to the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability rules, and a clause agreed in 2021 might just pay dividends in the coming weeks. Liverpool are said to be gearing up to make a 'significant' offer for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

They're eyeing the England centre-back as a replacement for Jarrell Quansah, who is poised to join Bayer Leverkusen in a £35million switch. Despite having only a year left on his contract, Guehi could command a price tag of £40m or more, according to The Times.

The Eagles resisted the temptation to cash in when Newcastle made a hefty bid for their skipper last year, confident that Guehi would still fetch a high price a year later. Guehi is tipped to depart and rejoin one of the traditional top-six clubs, after leaving Chelsea for Selhurst Park in 2021 following a successful loan spell at Swansea, reports the Express.

And that could be great news for the Blues, who will be aiming to challenge Liverpool for their Premier League crown next campaign.

He put pen to paper on a five-year deal for a fee of £18m, making him the third most expensive signing in Palace's history at the time. Chelsea were smart to also include a 20% sell-on clause in that agreement, reports The Mirror, which could now net them millions if Liverpool clinch the deal.

In April, Palace manager Oliver Glasner confessed he was uncertain about retaining Guehi at the club, despite ongoing contract talks. "We haven't just started talking about his contract," Glasner revealed.

"The talks were going on even before I arrived - for more than two years now. Marc is thinking what is best for his personal career and this is what we have to accept.

"I don't know [if he will sign a new deal]. I don't think about what happens in summer. On the 26th of May, I will turn my phone off for one or two weeks and then we will see what happens.

"Everybody knows he is a great footballer and great character. Let's see what happens. But, of course, no manager would want to lose their captain. It will be Marc's decision, but I know that he is so focused on improving his game and our game. It has no influence on his performances."

Liverpool's big-money move for Guehi might just play into Chelsea's hands, potentially giving Enzo Maresca's squad some much-needed financial leeway.

A cash boost around £8m certainly isn't something to turn your nose up at and could well tip the scales for a headline-grabbing transfer for the Blues.

This is particularly true when compared to the prospect of Guehi winding down his contract and departing on a free come next season's end, leaving Chelsea without a penny in sell-on fees.
