What Evangelos Marinakis said after Nuno Espirito Santo signs new Nottingham Forest contract

Winning trophies is the aim for Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the Portuguese boss signed a new contract with the club.

Nuno has signed fresh terms at the City Ground and is now committed to Forest until 2028, two years more than on his previous deal.

Marinakis has hailed Nuno as an “expert” in player development and said they share an ambition of “writing a new history” at the club together.

They hope that new history includes silverware. After returning the club to Europe for the first time in 30 years, the next aim is trophies.

Forest last won one of the three big domestic trophies in 1990, when they claimed the League Cup.

“Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far,” Marinakis told the club.

“He has demonstrated that he maximises player performance and is an expert at developing players, whilst also embedding our young talent into the first team set-up.

“We enjoy a strong and solid relationship together and, above all, we share the same dream and ambition of writing a new history for Nottingham Forest, competing in the Premier League and in Europe and winning trophies for our great club!”

Marinakis would have been keen to emphasise the strength of his relationship with Nuno amid the reaction to last month’s incident on the pitch at the end of the 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

Cameras showed Marinakis appearing to take out his frustration on Nuno after the final whistle.

But it was clarified that the owner’s irritation had not been with the manager, but over the handling of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury and the lack of a substitution.
