West Ham United look set to receive a healthy financial windfall this summer.

Despite the window having been open for several weeks now, there has been a distinct lack of movement at the London Stadium, though the same could be said for clubs all around England.

Very little business has been conducted in the Premier League so far, though West Ham will be eager to seal some incomings before the new campaign gets underway.

Several players may leave the Irons in order to generate funds to spend elsewhere, but after the latest update from Wearside, it seems as though West Ham will be in line for an influx of cash.

Sunderland midfielder set to depart Wearside

West Ham have sold a couple of players to Sunderland in recent years, making it quite fitting that the two clubs will face off against each other for the Premier League season opener in August.

One of those to have made the move to the Stadium of Light in that time period was former Hammers midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Ekwah’s statistics for Sunderland

The Frenchman was an instant hit on Wearside, but quickly grew out of favour when Regis Le Bris took over the Black Cats last season, leading to his loan move to recently relegated Saint-Etienne.

Now, it has been reported that the French side will be exercising their right to sign Ekwah permanently on a deal worth around £5.1million.

At the time of his West Ham departure, it was revealed that the Irons held a 35-per-cent sell-on clause [ExWHUEmployee], meaning that his sale will see them bank around £1.8m if the deal goes through.

David Sullivan, who ultimately signs off on all transfers, deserves praise for ensuring West Ham will profit from a player that little was expected of.

West Ham need to spend wisely this summer

Generating additional funds will be crucial this summer, and with Mohammed Kudus’ sale on the cards, West Ham should have money to spend.

However, as seen in the past, it’s not about how much you spend, it’s all about how well you spend it, and the Irons have failed to make the most of the latter.

That needs to change this summer, with plenty of areas needing attention before the season gets underway.
