Lee Clark declared bankrupt - former Newcastle United midfielder responds to shock news

Lee Clark made 265 appearances for Newcastle United across two spells at St James’ Park.

Lee Clark insisted he had “no idea” about being declared bankrupt hours after a court order ruled against him.

Filed by the London Gazette, the requester was One Stop Business, a finance firm based in York. The former Newcastle United midfielder is set to have his assets - which include a £2million home in Jesmond - frozen by the Insolvency Service.

The Mirror doorstepped Clark at his home regarding the decision. He replied: “I have no idea. I have no comment to make. I know nothing. Don't keep pressing the buzzer."

Clark played 265 times for Newcastle over two spells between 1990 and 2006. He helped the Magpies achieve Premier League promotion in 1991-92 and was part of Kevin Keegan’s famous “Entertainers” team.

Lee Clark’s infamous Sunderland jibe

A controversial move to Sunderland in 1997 soured the relationship but it would not be long before he was back in Newcastle fans’ good books. While still a Black Cats player, Clark was spotted at the 1999 FA Cup final wearing a t-shirt donning a derogatory term towards the club’s supporters.

The midfielder was soon dismissed and spent six years at Fulham before returning and finishing his career at St James’ Park. His son, Bobby, is now a professional footballer at Red Bull Salzburg.

Regret at Sunderland controversy

Clark has admitted regret to causing a stir several times over the years. He said in Janurary 2024: “Of course, I’ve got regrets. It was like biting the hand that feeds you. There were no camera phones then, just the old disposable ones and a few cameras clicked and it came out a few weeks later. It made my position at Sunderland untenable,’ Clark tells Mail Sport.

“I only played for three clubs (including Fulham). I’m very welcome at two and not welcome at one but you can’t change what’s happened. The groundsman had to get me a new entrance into the training ground because of the Sunderland fans ready to lynch me and rightfully so! I fully understood their feelings because you can’t be doing that to your own supporters. I’d undone two years of good work with them,’ says Clark.

“I’ve only been back once to the Stadium of Light for a Tyne-Wear derby when Sam Allardyce had his first game as Sunderland manager at home and won 3-0. Let’s just say that Northumbria Police weren’t too happy with me turning up at a powder keg game to light it up even more.”

Lee Clark on Tyne-Wear derby

Despite the Sunderland incident, Clark was happy to see Newcastle’s rivals promoted to the Premier League. Both clubs are gearing up for the first top-flight Tyne-Wear derby in nine years - set to take place on December 13.

"Do you know what, 've said this all the time, and my pals will tell you this, whoever spoke to us, I want Sunderland in the Premier League,” he told talkSPORT last month. “I want the derby games back. I would love Middlesbrough in the Premier League. I want the North East clubs back. Let's get North East football back on the map."
