Brian Sorensen is keen to push Everton further in the WSL next season, after two consecutive eighth-place finishes.

The Toffees were easily safe in the top flight last term, but a lack of growth from the 2023/24 season will no doubt have left supporters wondering what is needed to push further.

As the Blues now prepare to make the move to Goodison Park, the pressure to perform is on.

Sorensen will be forced to compete without one key name in the line-up, though.

Sara Holmgaard to leave Everton

Sara Holmgaard stepped up at Everton last season, nailing down her position in the Toffees side.

Despite being a left-back, Holmgaard registered seven goal contributions for her side over the campaign.

Homgaard was crucial for Everton last season.

While her contributions have been big for Sorensen’s side, the Toffees have now announced that she will be leaving Merseyside upon the expiry of her contract this summer.

Having first joined the club in 2022, alongside twin sister Karen, Holmgaard has certainly grown into her role to become one of the most crucial players for the Blues.

It’s yet to be seen what the future holds for the left-back, but the Everton boss will surely feel this as a big loss to the side’s efforts ahead of the new campaign.

Everton not having the best start to the summer

For a side that is keen to progress next season, losing key players like Holmgaard is certainly not helpful to the boss’ cause.

While the 26-year-old is at the end of her contract, given she only signed a new deal last summer, there must be questions asked of those making the decisions at Finch Farm.

The Toffees may not have anticipated just what a big part Holmgaard would have had to play last term, but losing her on a free this summer certainly feels like a massive blow.

It will be a hard task for the manager to replace his defender this summer, but he has to make sure the right business is done so his side doesn’t feel the hole in the Everton squad.

Meanwhile, Holmgaard will be hoping to get some minutes under her belt for Denmark in the Euros this summer to earn herself a new move for the campaign ahead.
