More exits are expected this summer
Left-back has been a problem position for a number of years for Manchester United.
Luke Shaw's constant injury issues mean he can't be relied on, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui having to fill in on the left at times last season. The club will hope Patrick Dorgu can make the position his own for years to come, but at just 20 he still has a lot to learn.
For a few weeks at the start of the 2022/23 season, United looked to have uncovered a gem in Tyrell Malacia. The Dutchman was brought to the club by Erik ten Hag and looked a steal at £12.9m following some very solid showings. But the wheels soon came off.
Malacia struggled to nail down a spot in the starting XI and suffered a tear in his left meniscus towards the end of the 2022/23 season. After undergoing surgery in the summer, he would soon suffer an inflammation around the affected knee and had to undergo yet another surgery.
"I had to start my rehab over, basically," he said of the injury. "I had one day to be disappointed and then I had to be like, 'OK, we go again'.
"At the end of the day, we want to do everything right, at the right time. Maybe it went a little bit too quickly before, so we've learned from that."
After a gruelling 18 months, Malacia finally returned to action in November 2024 before being shipped out on loan to PSV Eindhoven in the winter transfer window. Having struggled to impress during his time with United and following the signing of Dorgu in the same window Malacia joined PSV, it's clear the Dutchman is set for a permanent exit from the club this summer.
Malacia penned a four-year deal when he arrived at United, meaning the club must sell him for £3.22m to avoid making a loss on him under the league's profitability and sustainability rules.
Transfermarkt values Malacia at €8m (£7m), and if United can offload him for that fee they can be pleased with their work given his lack of game time over the last few seasons.
United need to sell players to fund further incomings this summer and selling Malacia for £7m would offer a timely boost.
