Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi wants to be a Red. To be fair, though, who wouldn’t? The Premier League champions are on the up-and-up. Their early and aggressive transfer business in the summer window so far has shown that they want to continue pushing for more trophies in the coming years.
With Friday’s monumental Florian Wirtz deal becoming official, Jeremie Frimpong already in the bag, and Milos Kerkez on deck, the future is looking bright on the Red half of Merseyside.
Young center-half Jarell Quansah looks to be headed to Bayer Leverkusen, and that will leave a spot open in defense. Marc Guehi has 12 months left on his contract, and it’s widely assumed that he is angling for a move to a Champions League team.
Now the rumour is that despite interest from other Premier League teams, such as Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle, and Chelsea, that Guéhi has his heart set on Liverpool. He believes, understandably, that the Reds have the best shot at making it into the latter stages of the Champions League, and the England international has big ambitions after climbing the ranks at Selhurst Park.
Chelsea and Newcastle snuck into the last two Champions League spots, and Spurs, languishing in 17th place on the Premier League table last season, took the back door into the competition by winning the Europa League title last month.
It’s true that Liverpool bombed out of Europe last season in the round of 16, falling to future winners PSG without much of a fight, but their strategic and expensive transfer business seeks to set them up for both domestic and European success next season.
Crystal Palace will not let their captain go lightly, and Liverpool’s willingness to shell out the cash will give them incentive to push for a premium — sources say at least £70m+. So it will come down to if Liverpool want to fight for Guéhi or if another defender has caught their eye instead.
