Amad has hinted at switch as Man Utd winger 'lined up for Newcastle transfer'

Amad has hinted at a major switch in the works, and it could rely on Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford completing a permanent exit this summer. The 27-year-old winger is widely expected to depart Old Trafford for good after Aston Villa opted against triggering their £40million buy option at the end of the season.

Barcelona have been strongly linked but are currently prioritising their pursuit of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. Whether there will be space in the budget for Rashford beyond the Arsenal target's arrival remains to be seen, which has sparked murmurs of a Premier League stay. According to The Sun, Newcastle United are ready to offer Rashford an escape route in the coming months.

It's claimed that while Barcelona are the England international's dream destination, Newcastle are confident they can provide the perfect platform for his next step.

Eddie Howe can offer Champions League football at St. James' Park next season and is said to be planning with Alexander Isak rather than anticipating an exit.

The report adds that Newcastle would be signing Rashford to provide the Swede with competition, although they currently prefer a loan.

Should Rashford walk away from Manchester this summer, he would leave his illustrious No. 10 shirt behind in the Old Trafford dressing room.

Matheus Cunha is the hot favourite to wear the shirt next term, having been its owner in his final season at Wolves.

There is a belief in some sections of the fanbase that United's decision to keep Cunha's number a secret when they confirmed his £62.5m transfer is because it isn't yet vacant.

However, Amad is primed to play just as crucial a role for Ruben Amorim next season, and it's clear that he is also eyeing a new shirt number.

During United's launch of the 2025/26 home kit, Amad shared a picture on Instagram with the caption, "16 [hourglass emoji]."

His social media actively represented a big hint that there are plans to upgrade the No. 16 he has worn since 2021.

Amad wore the No. 19 shirt when he first started playing for United's senior team before Raphael Varane's 2021 arrival from Real Madrid.

That number is vacant once again, but Bryan Mbeumo is almost guaranteed to be its owner if he seals his switch from Brentford.

With the 7 and 11 shirts also occupied, the No. 10 appears to be the only clear upgrade for Amad.

The 22-year-old could be given priority when United decide on Rashford's replacement over Cunha, considering he is the longer-serving player.
