Sheffield United might not be able to make Kyle Walker move, Man City star has had one thing taken from him - opinion

Chris Wilder’s departure from Sheffield United could play a significant part in Kyle Walker’s future amid links to the Blades.

Sheffield United have decided to replace Chris Wilder with Ruben Selles this summer following the Blades’ falling at the final hurdle in the Championship play-off final against Sunderland.

Whilst the decision to relieve Wilder of his duties will come as a huge surprise to many, it comes about after a new direction has been imposed by the owners, with Sheffield United wishing to appoint a more stats-and-numbers-based approach, one that may not have suited the former Blades man when it came to recruitment.

Whilst all signs point towards Selles being a solid replacement for Wilder, the former Hull City boss won’t be able to replicate one thing, which could lead to difficulties if Sheffield United attempt an ambitious pursuit of Kyle Walker from Man City.

Chris Wilder’s sacking could derail Sheffield United’s attempts to sign Kyle Walker

One thing that Chris Wilder had at the club, being a Sheffield lad, is a deep connection to all the fans and players, both past and present.

Especially with Sheffield United staying in the Championship, any chances of signing Walker would be incredibly difficult, whether it is the wages or the ambitions of the player to potentially want to go to a higher level.

Nonetheless, Walker has said that he wishes to retire at Sheffield United and put the famous red & white kit on at least one more time in his career.

EFL Analysis previously revealed that the club would be open to moving for Walker. With Wilder’s influence on Walker, as a fellow Sheffield-born Blade, the former boss might have been integral to bringing the Man City full-back through the doors at Bramall Lane, something that Selles may not be able to replicate.

What Chris Wilder once said about Kyle Walker returning to Bramall Lane

Wilder never shied away from the fact that he would love to bring Walker into the club with open arms. Even at the age of 35, he would be a fine addition to the current Blades side.

Speaking last season via The Star, Wilder said: “When he was talking about finishing his career at Sheffield United, he never mentioned that maybe he might have a visit to the Middle East or to somewhere in Italy before!” Wilder laughed. “We’ll still be there when he fancies that opportunity. It’s great to have incredibly talented individuals, who have achieved everything in the game, that still have a love for Sheffield United.

“It’s brilliant. I know the club means a lot to him. He’s never forgotten his roots. I get the odd FaceTime call off him and a couple of his mates. He loves the club and no doubt, one day, you’ll see his face knocking around here.”

This is the connection that would have been so crucial to bringing Walker back home, but with the new ownership, manager and change in direction, it would be safe to assume that such a deal would likely not be explored. It would also be understandable that Walker may not be quite as optimistic over a move with Wilder now out the door.
