After a difficult 2024/25 season that saw Manchester United finish 15th in the Premier League and lose to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, a major rebuild is expected at Old Trafford this summer.
Changes are needed across the entire squad. A new striker is a must, with Rasmus Hojlund failing to impress again, scoring just four Premier League goals. Reinforcements in central defence are also essential.
However, perhaps the most urgent issue United must address is the goalkeeper position.

Andre Onana once again failed to convince last season, making costly errors that directly led to the loss of vital points and matches.
Former Manchester United star Gary Neville commented on the Cameroonian’s struggles: “It’s mistake, after mistake, after mistake, he’s made so many and he’s been very erratic.”
“And that’s the one position you need consistency and reliability,” Neville added. “You can accept sometimes that a winger or a forward misses a chance – that happens. But for goalkeepers, they have to be reliable, and he’s not been.”

Fortunately for Manchester United, Andre Onana’s poor performances haven’t deterred potential suitors.
According to Sky Sports, French club AS Monaco are interested in signing the 29-year-old goalkeeper. Monaco, who secured Champions League football next season by finishing third in Ligue 1, are reportedly exploring the conditions of a deal for Onana. Their general manager, Thiago Scuro, has confirmed that signing a new goalkeeper is a top priority this summer.
If that transfer goes through, United already have their replacement in mind — Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi.
Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio reveals that initial contacts have been made with Carnesecchi’s agent, though no approach has yet been made to Atalanta.
Carnesecchi, 24, extended his contract with Atalanta earlier this year until 2028. The Serie A side, who finished third last season, are believed to value the Italian goalkeeper at around £43 million.
Former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who recently joined Roma after nine years with Atalanta, praised Carnesecchi’s growth last season.
“He is providing extraordinary performances with some decisive saves,” Gasperini said.
With United eager to secure a reliable presence between the sticks, the pursuit of Carnesecchi signals a clear intent to rebuild and restore confidence in goal for the seasons ahead.
